Abstract | This thesis examines the complexities of identity crises faced by second-generation immigrants as depicted in Zadie Smith's novel White Teeth, and explores the tension between cultural hybridity and the challenges posed by multiculturalism. The study examines the experiences of characters such as Erie Jones, Millat Iqbal, and Majid Iqbal, and analyzes their struggles with belonging, cultural assimilation, and the psychological burdens of negotiating multiple identities in a multicultural society. The characters in White Teeth collectively illustrate the multifaceted crises that second-generation immigrants face in negotiating cultural hybridity. Through their diverse experiences, the novel explores identity as a dynamic process shaped by history, migration, and globalization. By applying theoretical frameworks from Bhabha, Hall, and Friedman, we gain a deeper understanding of how the second-generation immigrant crisis unfolds at the intersections of tradition and modernity. Keywords: second generation, identity crisis; multiculturalism; hybrid identity; third space. |
