Abstract | Focused on women's experiences and agency within the highly regulated society of early 19th century England, this thesis discusses how feminist perspectives on gender roles and relationships can be found in Jane Austen's fiction in general and in Pride and Prejudice in particular. The thesis analysis provides a rich exploration of the complex dynamics between womanhood, social obligations, and autonomy as a reading tool for all the things is too broad supposition. For a feminist reading of certain selected novels through the stories of some relevant characters, the thesis presents key facets of feminist thought interspersed throughout their stories and those of other characters, including Judith Butler's concept of gender performativity. This thesis will also illustrate how Austen critiques patriarchal institutions like marriage and class structures, focusing that such systems not only shape and limit women's choices, but they also allow for realistic avenues of resistance and empowerment for women within them. By observing the layers of relations and networks among her female characters, this thesis reinforces Austen's subtle remarks on the connectivity between gender, class, and social codes. The findings show Jane Austen's fiction in general and her Pride and Prejudice's ongoing relevance in particular to feminist discussion, stressing its impact on a broader understanding of female independence, gender parity and the challenges of navigating restrictive social structures. The thesis concludes with suggestions for future research, including comparative studies and contemporary applications of feminist approaches to Austen's texts.
